To Darn Cold For A Horse To Heal
you know what is really hard? Trying to get a wound clean when you have no water. we have been getting into the single digits at night and everything is frozen solid and has not thawed yet. We have been taking out buckets of water and a water bottle with a squirt top to clean his wound and then drying his leg off after. what things you will do for love. lol. Over all he is doing really well, still healing. i was hoping he would be healed up by the end of December but it does not look like that will happen. when the cold came the healing slowed. only time will tell. These pictures were taken on the 11th of this month, and as you can see he has a little bit of icky still around the outside. but it is still much better then it was two weeks ago. i have not heard from the vet yet and will keep you updated as soon as i do.

BEWARE OF WHO YOU CHOOSE
Beware of who you choose as a farrier. i will not post there name on here. these pictures were taken about a week or two after his trim and the "craigslist farrier" (that is where i found his add) left his toes to long (on the fronts which are shod and the back where he was actually VERY lame at a walk in) and did not trim his bars back. i had my trusty barefoot friend come out today ( she is wonderful she helped me with this even while it was POURING down rain) she shoed me how to trim his bars back and what they really are suppose to look like (i didn't get pictures today after we did it because i did not want to get my camera wet but i will get some and post them soon)
if you would like to know who it was please message me directly.
also if your looking for a good barefoot trimmer let me know she might have some more opening and will travel (she lives in elma and comes down for chance where in Olympia)
This is the hoof he is lame in

poor guy
i found out more information on him. he was purchaced at auction on june 7th. kind of sad. we found each other on June 23rd and he was purchased at auction on the 7th. so within a few weeks he got a injury that could have nearly ended his life. he is a very lucky horse, despite all his problems he is still lucky. http://schwung.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=auction&action=display&thread=5236&page=1
here is a picture of the poor boy at the auction. he sold for $500

Chances Recovery Story:
Chance was a great racer in his days and won over $13,000 in his race career. Somewhere down the line he hit rock bottom and that is when we meet. i saw the potential in him and loved him from the start. i knew he had the will to go on he just needed a helping hand. He was offered for free on a classified add on craigs List, i set up a appointment to see him the very next day. I knew he had a barb wire injury to his right front leg but i did not know how bad it really was. The pictures here were taken june 24th 2009 (the day after i brought him home) This was the first horse that had had a injury like this that i had ever had to deal with ( i was always use to the normal bumps and scrapes on a horse) I will admit i had no idea what i was doing at first. When he walked his whole hoof looked as if it might fall off any moment. I dont know and will never know the complete story of how it happened, but all i do know is that they believed he did it on a barb wire fence, which would make sencse because of the way it looks. After i got him i was doing as his old owner told me to do (like i said i had no idea) i was bandaging his leg EVERY day (later found out from the vet i was doing more harm then good to him). i would clean it, soak it, put some corona ointment on and a cotton roll and some vet wrap daily. After about 2-3 days of that (after his bute(a pain med) wore off) he would no longer let me put it back on. So i called his old owner back and asked her who his vet was and what his number was.(she told me it all) I spoke with him about 3 days after these pictures were taken and he (supposibly knew what it looked like, makes me really wonder) and he told me not to bandage it anymore. so what did i do? i followed vets orders figuring he knew better then i did what to do. Well we started to develop some pritty bad Proud Flesh and i decided that i would get a second opinion and found a vet located locally and she quoted me (without even seeing it) $1000 plus for the whole procedure, lets just say i could not afford that and kept looking for other vets. i started searching online for vets in my area and trying to find out as much about them as i could, i ran across a vet in rainier and the year prior had taken in some horses (i think like 7) that were starved and neglected and gave them the proper vet care they needed and eventually found them new homes, it was then that i knew she was the vet for us. and that is when i found Dr.Perkins. i had her come out on 8/14/2009 and preform and a scrub, cut and debride on his injury (all in all that appointment cost me $400) and was told to change it from now on just once a week. well a week went by and i was out there (with ,my husbands help) and started trying to change his bandage. WELL he wouldn't even let me get it off. So i had to call the vet back again and asked her if i could get a perscription for a mild sedative (another $21.70) and i went to pick it up from her to see if that would work. well guess what? it didn't he was able to override it. so i called her back and set up a appointment to come out for me and do it (figured it would come out cheaper in the end if she just did it for us) Two weeks later (8/28/2009) came out and it looked so much better but still had a little while to go, but she was very impressed with his recovery and said we could just go every two weeks instead of once a week. so that right there made me quite happy. We had Dr.Perkins come out again on 9/9/2009 (not even a month after she did the surgery, and a little over a month since i got him and this is what it looked like.
Dr.Perkins is astound with how fast he has healed and says he might not even need another bandage in two weeks but she does want to come to a exam to make sure. He is completly sound in that leg, i didn't know if that was 100% possible but dr.perkins said there was a reason i named him "chance". all together i have paid $721.70 for him. he does still have aways to go but we have knocked down ALOT of what was weighing him down. the reason i wanted to write this blog is so everyone can learn from others mistakes and see that a miracle could happen and you should atleast try.
