                Chances Recovery Story:
Chance was a great racer in his days and won over $13,000 in his race career. Somewhere down the line he hit rock bottom and that is when we meet. i saw the potential in him and loved him from the start. i knew he had the will to go on he just needed a helping hand. He was offered for free on a classified add on craigs List, i set up a appointment to see him the very next day. I knew he had a barb wire injury to his right front leg but i did not know how bad it really was.

The pictures here were taken june 24th 2009 (the day after i brought him home) This was the first horse that had had a injury like this that i had ever had to deal with ( i was always use to the normal bumps and scrapes on a horse) I will admit i had no idea what i was doing at first. When he walked his whole hoof looked as if it might fall off any moment. I dont know and will never know the complete story of how it happened, but all i do know is that they believed he did it on a barb wire fence, which would make sencse because of the way it looks. After i got him i was doing as his old owner told me to do (like i said i had no idea) i was bandaging his leg EVERY day (later found out from the vet i was doing more harm then good to him). i would clean it, soak it,  put some corona ointment on and a cotton roll and some vet wrap daily. After about 2-3 days of that (after his bute(a pain med) wore off) he would no longer let me put it back on. So i called his old owner back and asked her who his vet was and what his number was.(she told me it all) I spoke with him about 3 days after these pictures were taken and he (supposibly knew what it looked like, makes me really wonder) and he told me not to bandage it anymore. so what did i do? i followed vets orders figuring he knew better then i did what to do. Well we started to develop some pritty bad Proud Flesh and i decided that i would get a second opinion and found a vet located locally and she quoted me (without even seeing it) $1000 plus for the whole procedure, lets just say i could not afford that and kept looking for other vets. i started searching online for vets in my area and trying to find out as much about them as i could, i ran across a vet in rainier and the year prior had taken in some horses (i think like 7) that were starved and neglected and gave them the proper vet care they needed and eventually found them new homes, it was then that i knew she was the vet for us.  and that is when i found Dr.Perkins. i had her come out on 8/14/2009 and preform and a scrub, cut and debride on his injury (all in all that appointment cost me $400) and was told to change it from now on just once a week. well a week went by and i was out there (with ,my husbands help) and started trying to change his bandage. WELL he wouldn't even let me get it off. So i had to call the vet back again and asked her if i could get a perscription for a mild sedative (another $21.70) and i went to pick it up from her to see if that would work. well guess what? it didn't he was able to override it. so i called her back and set up a appointment to come out for me and do it (figured it would come out cheaper in the end if she just did it for us) Two weeks later (8/28/2009) came out and it looked so much better but still had a little while to go, but she was very impressed with his recovery and said we could just go every two weeks instead of once a week. so that right there made me quite happy. We had Dr.Perkins come out again on 9/9/2009 (not even a month after she did the surgery, and a little over a month since i got him and this is what it looked like.

Dr.Perkins is astound with how fast he has healed and says he might not even need another bandage in two weeks but she does want to come to a exam to make sure. He is completly sound in that leg, i didn't know if that was 100% possible but dr.perkins said there was a reason i named him "chance". all together i have paid $721.70 for him. he does still have aways to go but we have knocked down ALOT of what was weighing him down. the reason i wanted to write this blog is so everyone can learn from others mistakes and see that a miracle could happen and you should atleast try.
